Panasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm F2.8 ASPH OIS Review

 The Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm F2.8 ASPH Incredibly OIS is one of two lightweight relationships for Little Four Thirds that Panasonic declared together with the DMC-GF1 in Sept 2009, the other being the Lumix G 20mm F1.7 ASPH Hot sweet. Panasonic Lumix G Vario 7-14mm F4 ASPH review


The Lumix G Vario 7-14mm F4 ASPH was the third lens Panasonic announced for its fledgling Micro Four Thirds system, back in March 2009. It certainly created a significant buzz on release, with the company taking advantage of the short back focus of the mirrorless mount to deliver a lens whose compact size belies its dramatically wide 114º angle of view and constant F4 maximum aperture. The 7-14mm is far and away the smallest zoom currently available to offer such a wide angle of view; compared to the Olympus equivalent for Four Thirds DSLRs its dimensions are shrunk by at least 20% each way, and it's just 40% of the weight.
Like all other zooms this wide, the 7-14mm F4 features a distinctive design, with a bulbous front element and an integrated hood to protect that large expanse of glass against stray light. The compact barrel houses no fewer than 16 pieces of glass, arranged into 12 groups, and including two aspherical and 4 extra-low dispersion glass elements to combat aberrations. However a side-effect of that large dome of glass at the front is that there's no facility to attach filters to the lens.
The 7-14mm is small and impressively spec'ed, but this does come at an eye-watering price: its $1000 tag is significantly higher than any APS-C wide zoom, and not so far off the Nikon 14-24mm F2.8, which not only covers a full frame sensor but is also a stop faster. It's also a lot more than Olympus's Micro Four Thirds wideangle - the tiny M Zuiko Digital 9-18mm F4-5.6 - which we praised for its combination of decent optics and remarkable compactness. So what extra does the Panasonic offer that might tempt you to spend all that money?

Panasonic 14mm F2.5 and 100-300mm F4-5.6 lenses - quick preview


Panasonic officially unveiled two long-expected Micro Four Thirds lenses alongside its DMC-GH2 interchangeable-lens camera - the 100-300mm F4-5.6 ultra-telezoom and the 14mm F2.5 wideangle. In addition it announced the commercial incarnation of a 3D stereoscopic lens which is primarily designed to produce images for viewing on its Viera TVs.
The 14mm F2.5 and 100-300mm F4-5.6 sit at almost diametrically opposite positions in the Micro Four Thirds lineup - the telezoom is the largest, heaviest and longest lens yet made for the system, whereas the wide prime is one of the smallest (and certainly the lightest) interchangeable autofocus lenses we've ever seen. Let's take a closer look, starting with the pancake prime.

Panasonic Lumix G 14mm F2.5 ASPH Pancake

The Lumix G 14mm F2.5 ASPH (also known as the H-H014) is Panasonic's second slimline 'pancake' prime for Micro Four Thirds, and has a 28mm-equivalent wideangle field of view. It's gained a welcome third of a stop maximum aperture from the original F2.8 design Panasonic originally exhibited at trade shows early in 2010, meaning that it's now capable of gathering twice as much light as the various Micro Four Thirds kit zooms which start at the same focal length.
The most striking aspect of the 14mm F2.5 is its size. In a word, it's tiny; in two words, really tiny. We must admit to being somewhat skeptical about the value of this lens in a system that already boasts no fewer than seven zooms covering this focal length, but the moment you take it out of the box you begin to understand Panasonic's line of thought. Resembling nothing more than a 20mm F1.7 that's been shrunk in the wash, the 14mm is substantially smaller than its stablemate, and noticeably more petite than even the Olympus Zuiko Digital 17mm F2.8 Pancake. Panasonic goes so far as to claim that it's the 'world's lightest interchangeable single focal length lens', tipping the scales at a featherweight 1.9 ounces (55g).
To achieve this Panasonic has gone to town on the optics: squeezed into the ultra-short barrel are six lens elements, no fewer than half of which boast aspheric surfaces. Internal focusing is employed, promising high speed and low noise for movie shooting. Owners of the 20mm F1.7 will be pleased to see the same size filter thread (46mm), but may also find themselves re-engaging in the pastime of sourcing a suitable third-party hood (as Panasonic again don't supply one with the lens).

Design

The 14mm F2.5 has a design immediately reminiscent of the 20mm F1.7. Despite its light weight it feels just as well made as its big brother, with a smoothly-damped manual focus ring and solid-feeling construction. To complete the package, it comes with new slimline front and rear caps (click here for a picture), which better complement the 'pancake' concept than the chunkier ones which are supplied with the 20mm F1.7 (credit to Panasonic for this, it's always nice to see a company paying attention to the small details).

On the camera

These views give some perspective on just how tiny the 14mm F2.5 really is - it looks almost comically small on the GH2 (which isn't exactly huge), and its slim lines are apparent from the top-down shot on the GF1.
The lens's dimensional minimalism really begins to make sense when you think of it as a complement not to the kit zoom, but to Panasonic's other small primes: the wonderful 20mm F1.7 ASPH and the Leica-branded 45mm F2.8 OIS Macro. Put these together and you have a modern-day equivalent of the three-lens kits that came with classic 35mm cameras such as the Leica CL(E) and Contax G1 / G2, and which are so light you'll be able to carry them around all day and night and scarcely notice. (Of course what we'd still really like to see for Micro Four Thirds is a wider prime around the 12mm mark, plus a true large-aperture 'portrait' lens, maybe something like a 50mm F1.4. Hopefully these will show up in due course.)

Compared to other pancake lenses

Here's the 14mm sitting snugly in the midst of a number of other contenders in this currently-fashionable segment. None of these could ever be described as large, but the 14mm is clearly the smallest of all. This despite being the second-widest in this group, and slightly faster than the other wideangle designs.

Panasonic Lumix G 100-300mm F4-5.6 OIS


The Lumix G Vario 100-300mm F4-5.6 OIS (or H-FS100300 in Panasonic-speak) is the longest and inevitably bulkiest Micro Four Thirds lens so far. This image-stabilized telezoom appears to be designed to tempt owners of Panasonic's popular series of FZ superzoom compacts to upgrade to the Lumix G system, with its 200-600mm equivalent range placing it firmly into the specialist 'sports and wildlife' category. However the 100mm 'short' end does make it a relatively poor complement to the 14-42mm or 14-45mm kit zooms, especally when compared to the smaller and cheaper 45-200mm F4-5.6.
The lens has a typically-Panasonic feature set, and is therefore designed with both stills and video use in mind. It combines internal focus and a stepper motor system for fast, silent AF, and features what Panasonic calls a 'zoom tracking control system', which we presume attempts to automatically keep the subject in focus while zooming during movie recording. Optical image stabilization inevitably makes an appearance, here branded 'Mega OIS'. Rounding off the specification is a 7-bladed diaphragm with rounded blades for the smooth rendition of out-of-focus regions of the image.

Design

The 100-300mm is a big, solid lens with the excellent build quality we've come to expect from Panasonic. The barrel is constructed from high quality plastics, and both the zoom and focus rings are smooth in operation. Design is entirely conventional with the large zoom ring dominating the barrel and a decent-size manual focus ring towards the front. A switch on the side for the optical stabilization unit completes the controls.

On the camera

The 100-300mm is, naturally, rather larger than the existing 45-200mm, and (because ya cannae beat the laws of physics) not so much different in size to 300mm telezooms for APS-C or full frame cameras. This makes it better matched to Panasonic's DSLR-like bodies than the 'rangefinder-style' GF1 or Olympus Pens, on which it practically defines the concept of front-heavy.

Lens body elements

The lens comes with this dedicated bayonet mount hood. It's made of thick black plastic, has molded ribs on the inside to minimize reflection of stray light into the lens, and reverses for storage.

It's about 2" (5cm) deep: slightly surprisingly, a little shallower than the one for the 45-200mm. This does mean you can operate the zoom ring unhindered while it's reversed, though.
The side of the lens barrel plays host to the familiar OIS mode switch - thankfully Panasonic hasn't been tempted to leave it off this lens and relegate the control to the camera menu.

Compared to...

Here's the 100-300mm alongside it's little brother, the Lumix G Vario 45-200mm F4-5.6 OIS. It's about 25% longer when retracted to its shortest length, almost 40% heavier, and uses 67mm filters as opposed to 52mm. Naturally this size difference becomes even more marked when both are zoomed to their longest setting (click here for comparison image).

Until now, anyone looking at the lenses being made for the new breed of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras could be forgiven for believing they're just slightly downscaled versions of conventional SLR optics. This isn't actually true, of course - ILC lenses are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and incorporating video-friendly features such as fast, silent internal focusing and stepless aperture control. But from the outside, nothing much has changed; they're all cylinders with zoom and focus rings. Until now.
Panasonic's Lumix G X Vario PZ 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH Power OIS is, however you look at it, a strikingly different prospect. Because while its specs may suggest just another kit zoom, even a passing glance shows it's something rather different. In reality it's a tiny, collapsible optically-stabilised zoom that's barely larger than the popular Lumix G 20mm F1.7 ASPH pancake prime when retracted. Panasonic has achieved this remarkable downsizing by discarding the mechanically-coupled zoom ring mechanism and the conventional manual focus ring, and replacing both with levers that operate motors inside the lens barrel. This allows the whole lens mechanism to be collapsed, much as it would be in a compact camera's lens. Like the co-announced Lumix G X Vario PZ 45-175mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH Power OIS telephoto, the lens is a power zoom.
Crucially, given the Lumix G series 'hybrid' stills/video philosophy, the inclusion of power zoom also enables smooth zooming during movie recording, something that's not easy when using a lens with a conventional rotary zoom ring. This ties-in with the lens's 'HD' tag, which designates that the lens's aperture and focus systems are optimized for movie use.

Power zoom is nothing new, of course; in the past Canon, Pentax and Minolta all dabbled with the idea for their 35mm SLRs. However the concept failed to gain widespread acceptance amongst enthusiast photographers, mainly because motorized zoom controls have historically been unable to match the speed, directness, and precision of composition offered by conventional mechanical zoom controls. (Then again it's worth remembering that the built-in lenses of compact cameras are overwhelmingly powered, and they seem to sell OK.)
Panasonic has addressed this by making the zoom control multi-speed. Pull the lever on the side of the barrel down slightly, and the lens will zoom slowly; pull it down further and it will zoom quickly. Again, this isn't a new idea, but how well it will be accepted by Micro Four Thirds user remains to be seen. Users may also be perturbed by the fact that there's no easy way to check visually what focal length you have set (except with the latest Olympus PENs, which display this on the screen). Manual focus is also controlled by a lever, which works in much the same way.
Equally notable about the PZ 14-42mm (and the PZ 45-175mm too) is the new 'X' branding. Panasonic is keen to point out that while the first lenses with this designation are 'HD' powerzooms, that's not what the 'X' means. Instead it simply designates a premium line of high-performance products; indeed the company is promising that the X 14-42mm will offer better image quality than both the existing 14-42mm kit lens and its highly-regarded predecessor, the Lumix G Vario 14-45mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH OIS. However upcoming 'X' lenses could be of any type: prime, power zoom, or conventional mechanical zoom.
In keeping with its premium status, the 14-42mm uses Panasonic's latest 'Nano Surface Coating' to minimise flare and ghosting caused by internal reflections. It also incorporates Panasonic's 'Power OIS' optical image stabilization technology, which promises a greater degree of correction to minimise the effect of shake when shooting hand-held videos. These features place it firmly as a higher-end alternative to the existing 14-42mm kit zoom, rather than a replacement.
Of course this is a Micro Four Thirds lens, and can therefore be used on Olympus PEN models as well as Panasonic's own Lumix G series. Olympus owners need have no fear about whether it will work - according to Panasonic it will be fully compatible with their cameras (and we've found no problems with it in early use).
